Former First Lady reads to kids to promote new literacy program

Barbara Bush Foundation’s Maine Family Literacy Initiative Awards $385,000 In New Grants

Barbara Bush announced today that The Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy’s Maine Family Literacy Initiative (MEFLI) has awarded a total of $385,000 to 17 communities in Maine. Maine Family Literacy Initiative funds are used to support parents and children as they improve their reading, writing and comprehension and share the bond that reading together creates. At a special ceremony today at the J. Richard Martin Community Center in Biddeford, ME, representatives from each program accepted their grant awards from Mrs. Bush. Mrs. Bush was joined by First Lady Ann LePage at the celebration.

Free Rockland program educates parents while children learn

ROCKLAND, Maine — As area children settled into their first day of school Tuesday, Sophia Nelson, 3, scribbled blue and yellow crayons onto a white sheet of paper. She decided it was done and showed it to teacher Clelia Sigaud, who gave her a piece of tape to stick the art to the wall. “The sticky part needs to go on the wall, OK?” Sigaud said.
“OK!”

Seven pieces of tape later, the art was on the wall and Sophia moved on to pulling books off the shelves.

The First Lady’s Family Literacy Initiative 2011-2012 Grants Announced

The winners of The First Lady’s Family Literacy Initiative for Texas grants for 2011 have been announced, bringing the total number of family literacy program implementation grants to 156 since the Initiative began. This is the 16th year of providing grants for family literacy projects in Texas. Launched at the Governor’s Mansion in Austin in 1996 by Honorary Chair Laura Bush, The First Lady’s Family Literacy Initiative has awarded over $4.3 million to create or expand family literacy programs in which parents, as well as their children, build their literacy skills by reading and learning together.  To date thousands of families have benefited from participation in these innovative programs in 83 Texas cities, and the Initiative is still going strong.  This year, nine grants totaling almost $450,000 were selected for funding to implement family literacy programs. The 2011 Maryland Initiative Grant Recipients

The Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy announced today that its Maryland Family Literacy Initiative   has awarded grants totaling $504,450 to 13 local organizations serving low-income, low-literacy Maryland residents.  Ranging from $40,000 to $50,000, ten implementation grants were awarded to nonprofit organizations and public agencies for the purpose of implementing family literacy programs in their communities. Winners were selected in a competitive process following the submission of proposals from a variety of organizations. Family Literacy programs work to improve the language and literacy skills of both parents and children and encourage a love of reading and education within families.

Barbara Bush Foundation Awards $600,000+ in New Grants
The Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy announced today that its  National Grant Program is awarding a total of $624,952 to 10 nonprofit organizations, public school districts, and other agencies across the United States to improve the literacy skills of parents and their children. Since its inception in 1989, the Foundation has awarded nearly $40 million to 863 family literacy programs in 50 states, including the nation’s capital.
