Carrying her mother's torch, former first daughter Doro Bush Koch brought this family tradition to her home state by founding the Maryland Initiative of the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy in 2004.

Doro and her good friend and sister-in-law, Tricia Reilly Koch, host this Celebration of Reading in Bethesda, MD, and with the participation of Barbara and George H.W. Bush in the program, the "family" aspect of the family literacy gift is always a highlight of the evening.  Guests can't wait to mingle with Doro and Tricia's families and the featured authors after the program at the buffet dinner.


The 2009 Maryland Celebration of Reading was held on May 11, 2009 at the Music Center at Strathmore. Authors for the event included Kelly Corrigan, Doris Kearns Goodwin, Jeff Kinney, Chef Art Smith, Brad Thor, and Mike “Coach K” Krzyzewski.
