The Florida Family Literacy Initiative: Recent Grantees Family Literacy Academy of Apopka Program Statement: The Family Literacy Academy of Apopka provides age-appropriate Children's Education, Adult education, Parent Education and Parent & Child Together Time through classes, speakers, workshops, and in-home activities with the goal of teaching English language proficiency and enhanced parenting skills to the adult learner, and preparing pre-school children for Kindergarten. Family Literacy Academy of Calhoun County Program Statement: The Family Literacy Academy of Calhoun County provides a four-component program through an innovative public library/school/FLI partnership. This unique program serves under-educated parents with children, ages birth to 3rd grade. The Academy provides academic, teacher-driven instruction for Adult Literacy/ESOL, children's literacy, parent empowerment and intergenerational literacy activities. Family sessions holistically address the challenges facing under-educated families. Program outcomes are measured using standardized testing, and qualitative analysis. Family Literacy Academy of DeSoto County DeSoto County Education Foundation Program Statement: Learning Together is the heart and soul of the Family Literacy Academy of DeSoto County. The Academy stresses the importance of the parent being the child's first teacher. The mission of the Academy is to provide a high-quality comprehensive family literacy program that encompasses: Adult Education, Early Childhood Education/School Readiness, Parent Education, and Parent and Child Together thematic units. The program is developed using the "strengths model" in which individual strengths are identified and used. Family Literacy Academy of Palm Beach County Program Statement: The Family Literacy Academy of Palm Beach County provides a twenty-hour a week program in which parents and children, birth through age 5, attend the same elementary school as their siblings. The program's goal is to assist adult students to improve their English skills in speaking, reading and writing while increasing parent involvement in their children's education within the school setting. The definitive goal of the Academy is to empower these adult participants to create a literacy enriched home environment and to acquire English proficiency skills for economic self-sufficiency and parental involvement and partnership in their children's education. Family Literacy Academy of Tampa Bay Program Statement: The Family Literacy Academy of Tampa Bay aims to break the cycle of illiteracy by providing families the literacy skills necessary to function in society and pursue higher education or job attainment. The program prepares parents to actively participate in their children's education and strengthens the parent and child relationship. Deaf Family Literacy Academy of Pinellas County Deaf Family Literacy Academy of Miami-Dade & Broward Counties Program Statement: The Deaf Family Literacy Academy serves families with a deaf or hard hearing child or parent in Broward, Miami-Dade, Pinellas and Hillsborough Counties in order to facilitate language, literacy, and fully accessible communication. Program services include home-visits, child literacy instruction, parent education, and parent literacy instruction in American Sign Language, parent support groups and Parent and Child Together Activities. Volunteer USA Family Literacy Academy #1, LLC Program Statement: Volunteer USA Foundation's first LLC, The Family Literacy Academy at Lake Wales, in partnership with Polk State College, provides family literacy services to 70 disadvantaged families. The Lake Wales Family Literacy Coalition, established for the family literacy academy, advises staff and supports families. The program supports families with services that remove educational barriers and maintain a literacy focus for the entire family. The program's focus will be expanded early childhood education. Volunteer mentors/tutors work closely with families to meet their goals and a social worker is on call to assist families in need. |
